On June 14, the Cabinet made the decision to designate Thapelo Tsheole, a financial market specialist and entrepreneur from Botswana, as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Rwanda’s Capital Market Authority (CMA).
The CMA is a specialized institution responsible for both the development and regulation of the capital markets industry. It also oversees the commodities exchange and related contracts, warehouse receipts systems, and collective investment schemes.
Thapelo Tsheole: Early Life and Education
Thapelo Tsheole’s journey in the financial world began with solid academic foundations. He holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences with a major in Economics from the University of Botswana. He further enhanced his expertise with a Master of Commerce in Financial Markets from Rhodes University, South Africa, and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Cape Town.
Thapelo Tsheole was born in Botswana. He holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Single Major Economics) from the University of Botswana, which he completed between 1996 and 2000. Additionally, he holds a Master of Commerce (MComm) in Financial Markets from Rhodes University in South Africa, which he completed between 2005 and 2006. He also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town, which he completed in December 2013.
Professional Career
Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE)
Tsheole’s most prominent role before joining CMA was his tenure as the CEO of the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE). He led BSE from 2016, bringing in significant transformations. Under his leadership, BSE underwent demutualization, which involved transforming it from a member-owned organization to a shareholder-owned one. This change was crucial for enhancing governance and attracting investments.
During his time at BSE, Tsheole introduced several innovative financial products such as green bonds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
