Canyon Village, Y. – Part of Yellowstone National Park was closed Thursday morning after a suspect exchanged fire with park rangers.
According to the National Park Service, rangers responded to a report of “a person with a gun making threats” in the Canyon Village area.
“When rangers approached the individual, an exchange of gunfire occurred between the subject and law enforcement rangers,” a Park Service spokesperson said in a statement.
The gunman – who has not been publicly identified – was killed.
A Yellowstone Park ranger was injured and was being treated at a nearby regional hospital, the park service added.
FBI and NPS agents remain on scene; The area around the Canyon Lodge complex is closed for investigation.
No other details were immediately available.
The 3,468-square-mile Yellowstone National Park was America’s first national park, and is one of the most visited in the national park system.
