Government of India launched Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Grameen to provide permanent houses to economically weaker poor families in rural areas of the country. Before 2015, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was known as Indira Awas Yojana, but later the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi added some new features to the scheme and renamed it as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to provide more benefits to the beneficiaries.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Rural Eligibility Criteria
To apply under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Grameen (PMAY-G), applicants must possess certain qualifications, these qualifications are
- Applicant must be a citizen of India.
- The applicant must not have a definite permanent home or be homeless.
- The applicant should not have more than two rooms in a mud house.
- The family should not have any member between the age of 16 to 59 years.
- If there is a female member in the household then there should be no male member between 16 to 59 years of age.
- There should be no educated person above 25 years of age in the house.
- No member of the family should be inducted into government service.
