New sections of Hwy 183 take shape

Austin, Texas – Highway 183 is undergoing major reconstruction through Northwest Austin. Two separate projects are both running slightly behind schedule. But, a small section is open, and it will add a new lane for commuters.
The ramps being built at MoPac are the new express lanes for Hwy 183. The ramps will provide links on and off the MoPac Tollway.
A computer rendering shows how the elevated section will extend past the stack and into 2222. It’s an impressive design that’s part of the $612 million 183 North reconstruction that’s being done to help commuters like Karen Hawkins.
“It’s crazy,” said Karen Hawkins, who is waiting for the work to end.
The entire 183 North project is not scheduled for completion until late 2025. In a surprise move, a section of the new free lane was recently opened to commuters. With more sections opening by mid-August, the 183 will offer eight free lanes. The new retaining walls and drainage will allow for the widening of Hwy 183 and also allow for the creation of twin express lanes northbound and southbound.

“Sometimes it’s fun to watch, but it’s also a little bit scary when you’re working, and they just hear a boom, they turn around or tell you this, the car crashes. I don’t even know if it’s Whether it’s a car accident or a construction thing,” Orocita said.
The end of the work may be welcomed, but Orocita said it will not spend any money to use the new express lanes.
“To be honest, probably not. I mean, who knows, right? If it calls for it, but maybe not,” Oristiata said.
The expansion of the 183A tollway is another major project for CTRMA. That’s a $259 million job. Most of the work is done at Hwy 29 between the San Gabriel River and Liberty Hill. Construction is running behind schedule, now aiming for completion in late October.
The opening may slide until January, but when it does, the additional toll lane will give commuters like Alex Panushkin a new option.
Project managers with the Mobility Authority say the opening of four new lanes along the Hwy 183 North project appears to be helping traffic flow. The big test will come when school resumes in mid-August.
