Initially the name of this scheme was Rajiv Gandhi Jeevan Dani Arogya Yojana. The then central government had announced this scheme in the state of Maharashtra in July 2012.

The scheme was launched on 21 November 2013 in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Maharashtra Health Minister Suresh Shetty, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and others and with the efforts of Indian National Congress President Sonia Gandhi in 35 districts of Maharashtra state. Later on 1 April 2017, the name of the scheme was changed to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jal Arogya Yojana.
