Austin, Texas – A legendary Austin R&B musician is celebrating his milestone 95th birthday.
Levelle White is known for her rhythm-and-blues singles, her career dating back to the 1960s.
With a live band in front of the audience, mic in hand while singing one of her favorite songs, White recounts how she celebrated her birthday Sunday at the West Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
“It makes me feel great,” White said.
“She could still sing, she was kicking them out,” said Nancy Coplin, vice president of the Housing Opportunities for Musicians and Entertainers (HOME).
White was a musician with an extensive music catalog in her younger years. She toured and performed in the US from the 60s to the 90s, and at one point, even toured Europe.

“She still has it at 95, she really does, and she’s still beautiful,” said Faye Martin, White’s niece.
White’s debut album “Miss Level” was released in 1994, followed by “It Haven’t Been Easy” in 1997 and “Into the Mystique” in 2003. She also shared the stage with other notable artists including James Brown, Sam. Cook, Smokey Robinson and Aretha Franklin.
“I think her career is what keeps her going, her memories and the gifts and talents she has inside,” Martin said.
During her birthday celebration, she was able to enjoy music, cake and received many gifts from those in attendance.
“She was so happy, we had some of her family fly in from Louisiana and all over town for this, plus the residents who live with her got to enjoy the show,” Koplin said.
“I haven’t really seen him in 20-something years, but we kind of keep in touch with him but actually seeing him, I haven’t seen him in a while,” Martin said.

There was a line to take pictures with White and a few well-known actors stopped to wish her a happy birthday.
“They love her because she has that personality that really draws people to her,” Martin said.
“He’s an icon not only of Austin music but of music around the world,” Koplin said.
The celebration was organized by HOME, a nonprofit that provides support to aging musicians.
“We’ve taken care of her rent and utilities for ten years. She’s very special to me. I’ve known her for a long time and I want to help celebrate her birthday,” Koplin said.
White had this to say to all who celebrated her 95th birthday: “I really appreciate it, thank you.”
