Democratic governors have insisted they support President Joe Biden despite his poor debate performance and called on him to step aside.
A trio of governors spoke highly of the president to the media after Wednesday’s closed-door meeting at the White House.

California’s Gavin Newsom, Illinois’ JB Pritzker and Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer were nowhere to be seen, despite their presence at the meeting.
Instead, Governors Tim Walz of Minnesota, Wes Moore of Maryland and Kathy Hochul of New York addressed reporters after the meeting.
It’s the president’s latest attempt to prove he can win over the American public after his disastrous debate performance.
Speaking at the meeting, the White House announced that “the president reiterated his determination to defeat the existential threat of Donald Trump at the ballot box in November and sought the advice and expertise of Democratic governors.
While the White House did not elaborate on what Biden will discuss during his meeting, several governors admitted they were pleased with what they heard.
“He was honest, he was candid. We were honest about the feedback we were getting,” Gov. Wes Moore told reporters outside the White House.
He declared that he and his colleagues look forward to working with Biden on his next steps
“The thing that makes us most optimistic and optimistic is that we are optimistic about the future. We know we have work to do, we know we are behind.”
However, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was quick to address the elephant in the room.
When a reporter asked about the president’s well-being, he quickly confirmed that he was “fit for office.”
“None of us deny that Thursday night was a poor performance. It was a bad hit, if you will, but that doesn’t affect what I believe: He’s delivering.
During the meeting, he revealed that he and others voiced their concerns but came to an agreement that “we’re all looking for a way to win. All the governors agree with that. President Biden agrees with that.
“What we saw out there today was a guy who we all believed for the first time could beat Donald Trump and beat Donald Trump,” he said.
Gov. Kathy Hochul added that she was able to understand what the president’s plans were once the meeting began.
“We came together tonight to hear President Biden tell it in his own words,” she said.
“Joe Biden is going to win it. The stakes couldn’t be higher.”

Before the meeting, several governors made it clear they were counting on Biden to run in the next election.
“Democratic governors are some of the president and vice president’s most active and vocal supporters because they have seen how the achievements of the Biden-Harris administration are directly benefiting their residents,” an official told the publication.
According to the White House, the meeting was held in the Roosevelt Room at 6:30 p.m. EDT on Wednesday.
Newsom also added that talking about Biden resigning last week would be “unhelpful and unnecessary.”
“I’m old fashioned, but on substance, Joe Biden won the debate last night. That’s important to me,” Newsom wrote in a Biden campaign fundraising pitch on Friday.
“We are not going to turn away because of one performance. What kind of party does he have?”
