Two people have died, and one is in hospital with serious injuries, after ATCEMS responded to several emergencies on local trails.

There was a call of a fatal bike accident on the Southern Walnut Creek Trail Saturday, June 29 around 10:45 am.

ATCEMS says a biker fell off his bike, hit his head and was ejected. They were taken to Dale Seton for a serious potentially life-threatening medical problem.

“We’ve run 19 wilderness rescues so far this month and we’ve run 10 rescues in June compared to last year. We’re not sure if that’s really heat related.” said ATCEMS Capt. Darren Nock.

Around 9 a.m. Saturday, first responders were called to Walnut Creek Trail near Loyola Lane for a bike accident.

Extensive resuscitation efforts were performed by first responders, including CPR, but unfortunately the man died.

At 7:17 p.m. on June 28 near the Pennybaker Bridge Overlook, a man was found about halfway down the trail.

First responders say they went into cardiac arrest. CPR was performed, but the person did not survive.

“The first thing first responders need to know is where to send help, so that’s always important, and areas like Greenbelt are very difficult to address, that’s why we encourage people and all first responders in the area to use the what3words app,” Capt. Knock said.

According to ATCEMS, the app will help first responders find you.

“It breaks the whole world down into 10-foot by 10-foot squares and assigns them a three-word address versus an actual numerical and street address, and it allows us to know really precisely where that patient is,” said Capt. Nock.
